are all timeshare transfer companies phoney?

Has anyone actually used this company to unload their timeshare? If so, how long did it take and were you satisfied? Are there any legitimate companies out there that anyone knows of?

In light of the economy there's no market for the timeshare industry at this time. However there are companies that will take title to your timeshare using all of the procedures required by the timeshare company. These companies require that you pay them to take the timeshare off your hands. It sounds counterintuitive but it does get you out from under the continuing obligations and the truth is, there are almost no buyers for timeshares. Please give us the name of the company you're dealing with, and we'll try to tell you whether this is a legitimate firm or one of the many many scam companies whose purpose is to separate people from their money.

The name of the company is Transfer America. We are meeting with them this Sunday. They told us that all we would have to pay is the title transfer fee. But I have no idea what that fee generally is. Is there any way to find out what that fee is before we go to our meeting?

Timeshare scams are reported by the Florida Attorney General to be the fastest increasing complaint in the state. He has even created a page on the state website http://www.myfloridalegal.com/timeshares
This is from the AG' site:
* Don't pay any up front fee
* Don’t expect to receive the same amount that you originally paid for your timeshare. Many factors influence the resale price including season, location, unit size and age. In particular, if you have owned your timeshare interest for less than five years or if it is not in a well-known resort location, the resale price will reflect this. Remember, a timeshare should be considered a vacation-use product, rather than a traditional real estate investment, although it may include a small interest in real estate.
* Don’t give up the right to use the timeshare accommodations for any purpose while you are selling your timeshare unless you have decided to rent your week/interval —for which you should receive the rental amount less any commissions.
If you simply want to liquidate your ownership to be relieved of the maintenance fee, there are several brokers who specialize in timeshare and only earn a commission or fee at closing when the timeshare is transferred out of your name. Progressive Real Estate Agency (www.progressiveresales.com) is one.. There are others listed on the website www.ltrba.com.

A timeshare transfer is a process where a timeshare owner passes his timeshare unit to someone else. The owner transfers the timeshare to the other person, along with a new contract and the responsibility to pay all the annual fees.
